Don't miss this NY Times article on the guy Bush has been ignoring: In dozens of interviews on Friday and Saturday in five hotly contested states, such steely sentiments were echoed again and again. Supporters of Mr. Bush said the bin Laden tape had strengthened their resolve to vote Republican by reminding them of the grave threats still faced by the country, while Mr. Kerry's supporters said the tape was yet another reminder that the Bush administration had failed to catch Mr. bin Laden. Even the undecided said the tape would not influence their decision. Indeed, with passions raised to such a pitch by this election, and with many people already committed to their choices, Mr. bin Laden and his blustering postures may have achieved a strange and remarkable feat: making himself irrelevant, despite the analysis of some political operatives that his tape could affect the election, to Mr. Bush's benefit in particular. And as to the OBL tape's irrelevence to the election, don't you believe it. People are pissed he's still out there, even if it seems unseemly to talk about it. E&P has this round-up of the Kerry victory in the newsprint world: In all, Bush gets 13 new papers added to our tally today as his opponent wins 11, but Kerry continues to lead in the overall count by 186 to 151. Kerry also holds a wide lead in circulation of supporting papers, by about 19 million to almost 13 million. E & P has learned that The Pioneer Press (Saint Paul) in key battleground Minnesota will endorse Bush on Sunday. While the paper also backed the president in 2000, this had seemed like a potential switch to Kerry, as Knight Ridder papers around the country have gone for the challenger by at least 18-2. Like many other leading papers supporting Bush, the Pi-Press did it with something of a heavy heart. "Both candidates leave us wanting," the Sunday editorial says. But while suggesting the president had been too much of divider, and not "frugal" enough, it added, "We believe that he will lead the country with a decisiveness that Sen. Kerry cannot muster." Kerry, however, gained the St. Cloud Times in the same state. He also picked up one more paper that had backed Bush in 2000, bringing that total for him to 42. Bush has picked up only six papers that endorsed Al Gore then. The latest flip-flopper to Kerry was in hard-fought Michigan, at the Petroskey News-Review. In addition, four other papers switched from pro-Bush in 2000 to neutral today, bringing that overall total to at least 15. Two of them are in another battleground state, Florida: the Stuart News and Jupiter Tribune. Kerry also picked up the Fort Pierce Tribune and has virtually swept that key state's mid-sized and larger papers. Literacy for Kerry. Even the Bush endorsements are tepid, or matched by an op-ed for Kerry for balance; in some cases the Bush endorsement competes with a round-up in the same edition of everywhere else going for JFK. All of this reflects the readership. The country is weary of Bush... let's see what they do about it in two days. Oh, btw, Sunday's Doonesbury is being censored today by 20 papers because of Cheney's non-Sunday school language. | |

Cherie Blair lambasts Bush over human rights CHERIE Blair has criticised the policies of the US President George W Bush, attacking his stance on terrorist prisoners and gay rights. The Prime Minister's wife was condemned by supporters of the US President, after a speech to Harvard law students which contained a stinging rebuke to Bush, while on a lecture tour of the United States. She attacked the manner in which the White House has dealt with the human rights of UK citizens detained at the US-run Camp X-Ray prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Blair said the decision by the US Supreme Court, fiercely opposed by Bush's government, to give legal protection to two of the Britons detained at the camp was "profoundly important" and a "significant victory for human rights and the international rule of law". She took a sideswipe at Bush's record on gay rights, condemning the arrest of a homosexual couple in the President's home state of Texas, for defying a ban on gay sex. The US Supreme Court's decision to throw out the law, which had been backed by Bush, was a "model of judicial reasoning". Blair also called the US legal code an "outdated grandfather clock". The controversial speech was seen as flying in the face of long-held tradition that British political figures, and those close to them, do not criticise other countries during foreign visits. Doing so just days before the US elections makes the intervention all the more embarrassing for Prime Minister Tony Blair as well as Bush. Good for her.
